Tips for Writing a Bio for Website

Here's a few pointers for writing your Web Site Bio:

  • Remember your audience. Use the word "You" more than "I"
  • Write to 5 different personas; don't leave out anyone
  • Keep use of the word "I" to a minimum
  • Keep it brief and to the point
  • Chop the content up into paragraphs (large paragraphs don't fare well on the web)
  • Use bullet points as much as possible (people scan the web, they don't read it)
  • Use personal pronouns
  • Be conversational and avoid business jargon
  • Use short words; avoid long hard to scan words
  • Use short, choppy sentences
  • Tell why you are different or better than your competition (What makes you stand out?)
  • Include a photo of yourself winning an award or similar
  • Be humble, stay away from superfluous sales jargon that may raise a red flag
  • Give facts about yourself instead of fluff
  • Don't ramble
  • Tell the benefits of using your company or your services
  • Tell personal info, but keep it brief and put towards the bottom
  • Put your credentials, Awards and Affiliations on the About Us page in bullet points
  • Edit your work for grammar and spelling errors
  • Use keywords every once in a while to attract search engine crawlers and traffic
